An Amsterdam Animation Brief Usually Asks for One Film and Needs a System

Most enquiries that reach studios in this city begin the same way. A launch is booked, someone wants a short piece that explains the product, and the date is six weeks out. The film gets made, it works, and then the same team needs a shorter cut for a conference screen, a silent version for the pricing page, and three more explainers when the next feature ships. Whether the first invoice was money well spent is decided at that second moment, and it usually turns on reuse rather than on craft.

That is the most useful lens on buying animation in Amsterdam. The city carries an unusual density of product companies, scale-ups and international marketing teams who commission motion work repeatedly rather than once, and the studios that have lasted here are shaped by that demand. If you treat the first project as the moment you set up a way of working instead of a single commission, your shortlist changes shape.

Two Different Trades Share the Word Animation

A motion designer who builds typographic and interface sequences and a character animator who gives a puppet weight and timing are not interchangeable, even though both will happily answer the same brief. Add a third group, the 3D generalists who model and light a product before anything moves, and there are three separate hiring decisions hiding behind one word. Most disappointing projects come from asking one of the three to do another's job because a reel looked good in general.

Name the craft in the brief. If the piece is a product walkthrough with an interface at its centre, you want people whose reel is full of screens that stay legible at small sizes. If the piece needs a character the audience reads emotion from, you want acting in the reel, not just smooth easing. Asking a studio which of the three disciplines it would put on your job, and who that person is by name, gets you further than asking for a rate.

How the Supply Splits in Amsterdam

Four kinds of supplier answer these briefs locally. Brand and design studios that added motion to protect the identity work they already do. Small outfits of a handful of people who live inside After Effects and Cinema 4D. Video production companies with an animation desk attached, useful when the piece mixes filmed footage and graphics. And an unusually large freelance layer, assembled into project teams by a producer.

None of these is right in the abstract. The identity-led studio earns its premium when the film has to define a visual language you will live with for years. The small specialist tends to be faster and cheaper on the second and third film once it knows your assets. The freelance collective can be excellent, and is the option where you should be most precise about who is under contract, who absorbs a missed date, and what happens if the lead animator takes another booking mid project. That question is not rude, and a competent producer expects it.

The Handover That Makes the Second Film Cheap

Before signing, establish what arrives when the project closes. The exported video is the least interesting item on the list. What matters is the working project file, the layered source artwork, the built rigs, the fonts as properly licensed files, and a short note explaining the folder structure. With those, your next supplier or your own designer can produce a cut-down in an afternoon. Without them, every variation is a fresh quote.

Studios differ honestly here. Some hand over everything as a matter of course. Others price the source separately because their rigs really are proprietary tooling. Both positions are defensible; discovering which one applies after the final payment is not. Put it in the proposal in plain language, next to how long the studio keeps a backup and how you would retrieve it in two years.

A Motion Kit Is a Different Purchase From a Film

Teams that buy animation more than twice a year eventually commission a kit instead: editable templates for lower thirds, end cards, subtitle styling, transitions and a couple of loop backgrounds, plus written rules on timing and easing. It is a smaller and far less glamorous job than a hero film, and it changes the economics of everything afterwards, because routine social and product content stops going out to quote.

If that is where you are heading, say so at the start. The studio that suits a single showpiece is not always the one that documents well, and documentation is most of the value in a kit. Ask to see one it has delivered, then ask to speak to the in-house designer who inherited it.

Voice, Music and Usage Sit Outside the Frame Count

Three costs travel alongside the animation and are quoted separately often enough to cause arguments. A voice artist is engaged for a defined use, and paid media costs more than a website embed. Library music carries a licence bound to a term, a territory and a media type. Sound design is labour, not a courtesy. Briefs here frequently involve both Dutch and English versions, which means a second voice session, a re-timed edit, and, wherever text appears on screen, a rebuilt layout rather than a swapped word.

Price all of that at proposal stage with the term written down. A film you cannot legally run in a paid campaign after the first year is a problem that surfaces at the worst possible moment.

What to Send So the Quotes Actually Compare

Give every studio the same short document: what the piece has to achieve, where it will be seen and in which aspect ratios, whether sound will be on, the running time you have in mind, the languages, the date that cannot move, and the reuse you expect over the following year. Ask each one to break its number into script, design and style frames, animation, sound, and revisions, and to state how many review rounds are included and what an extra round costs.

Totals that look far apart usually differ in scope rather than in greed. One included a script and two language versions; the other assumed a finished script and wanted a change order for the second language. None of that is visible from a single figure.

Where to Start in Amsterdam

Start with reels rather than company descriptions. Pick three studios whose work contains the specific craft your piece needs, send all three the same document, and compare the breakdowns line by line. Profiles for the providers listed here sit in the animation company directory, and if your piece depends on an interface that has to be built or prototyped first, the local app development teams and software firms in the city are worth reading alongside them. When the brief is ready, send it once and collect the quotes in one place. If you want a feel for how a much deeper talent pool prices the same work, the roster in London is a useful reference point.
