What Kind of Animation Work Actually Travels to Asia

Buyers who look outward are rarely commissioning a finished animation from a standing start. They are buying capacity for the stages of an animation pipeline that eat the most hours: clean up and in between drawing, rigging, layout, texturing, lighting, rendering and compositing. Those stages have measurable outputs, they can be reviewed shot by shot, and they cross borders without much friction. The stages that resist the move are the ones built on conversation. A script, a casting choice, comic timing and the judgement of whether a joke lands all rest on shared reference, and they get expensive when they are argued over a laggy call.

Decide before you write the brief which of the two you are buying. An animation studio that is superb at execution may have no appetite for owning your concept, and a shop that wants to author the idea will not be the cheapest place to park forty shots of clean up. Confusing the two is the most common reason a first offshore project disappoints, and no amount of daily reporting fixes it afterwards.

Service Studio or Author Studio, and Why the Label Matters

The regional supply splits along that same line. Service houses grew up finishing work for foreign broadcasters and feature producers, so they are organised around throughput, quality control and hitting a delivery slot. Author studios grew out of local commissioning and original series, so they pitch treatments, have opinions about story and expect creative credit. A third group, smaller and newer, sells motion design and explainer animation directly to marketing teams and behaves more like a design agency than a production house.

Ask a candidate to describe the last three jobs and say who wrote the script, who directed, and who signed off the final grade. The answer places them on that spectrum faster than any showreel. A reel shows what a team was paid to do once. It does not tell you whether the people who did it are still in the building.

The Overnight Relay Only Pays If Your Notes Are Written

The genuine advantage of working across this many hours of difference is that your evening becomes their morning. Send notes at the end of your day and there is a new version waiting when you start. That relay collapses the moment your feedback needs a conversation to be understood. Vague notes travel badly, and a single ambiguous comment can cost a whole cycle.

So invest in the review format rather than the meeting schedule. Frame accurate annotation on a shared player, numbered notes tied to timecode, and a short written summary of what changed since the last version will do more for an animation project than a standing call at an hour that suits nobody. Agree one overlap window a week for the genuinely hard questions and keep everything else asynchronous.

Rigs, Scene Files and the Chain of Rights

What you receive at the end matters more here than on a job made down the road, because you cannot walk into the building and ask for a file. Put the handover in the contract with the same weight as the delivery date: layered source projects, character rigs and turnarounds, textures and shading networks, cached simulations, the render settings, the audio stems, and any in house tool the team wrote to make the piece work.

Then look at who actually held the pencil. Many studios staff peaks with freelance animators, and rights only reach you if each of those contributors assigned them upward. Ask for confirmation that the chain is complete, and ask whether any asset in the scene was licensed to the studio rather than to you. That is where a quiet dependency usually hides, and it surfaces a year later when you want a small edit.

Holiday Calendars Decide Your Schedule More Than Your Deadline Does

Animation planning across Asia has to respect calendars that do not line up with a Western working year. Lunar new year closes some markets for the better part of a fortnight, and the run up is slower than usual because staff travel. Other markets pause for a major religious festival that moves each year. Monsoon season affects commuting and power stability in places where a render farm sitting idle for a day is a real cost.

Ask each candidate for their closure dates in writing before you agree a delivery date, and ask what their contingency is if a stage lands on top of one. A studio that answers precisely has planned around it before. Build the buffer into the schedule rather than into your own nerves.

Buy a Test Sequence Before You Buy the Series

The most reliable way to judge a remote partner is to pay for a contained piece of the real job. One sequence, one character, one product shot, priced and scheduled on its own, with the same review process you intend to use for the full run. You learn how the team reads a brief, how they respond to notes, and whether the second version is genuinely better than the first.

Keep the test small enough that walking away is cheap and real enough that the result is usable. Two candidates running the same test in parallel is often worth the extra spend, because it turns an abstract comparison of studios into a comparison of two versions of your own film.

Sending One Animation Brief Across Asia

Comparable proposals come from an identical document: animation format, runtime, number of shots, style reference, languages, review rounds, handover list, delivery date and intended usage. Then read the questions that come back. A team that asks about your approval chain and your delivery specification has run this before. A team that quotes within the hour has not read the brief.

If the work touches neighbouring crafts, evaluate those separately rather than bundling them: software teams when a piece has to be driven by live data, app developers when the animation ships inside a product, and marketing agencies when the film is one asset in a campaign. Within the region you can also compare a metropolitan market such as this regional hub against high volume centres like Manila or Ho Chi Minh City. Verified profiles and client feedback across the wider studio directory are on Edvido, and you can put one scope in front of a shortlist so that every reply answers the same question.
