Screens, Not Feeds, Drive Animation in Las Vegas

In most cities the default destination for a commissioned piece is a social feed or a website. Here a large share of the work ends up on physical hardware: exhibition stands, conference stages, lobby walls, attract loops on machines, wayfinding, projection onto surfaces that are not flat, and outdoor displays built at a scale that makes normal design rules useless. That single fact should change how you brief, how you budget and who you hire.

Animation made for hardware has different constraints from animation made for a player window. There is no pause, no scrub, often no sound, and the viewer is walking past rather than sitting down. Studios that work here constantly understand that. A shop whose reel is all product explainers may produce something beautiful that reads as mush from twelve feet away.

Get the Technical Specification Before Anyone Starts

The venue, the stand builder or the media owner holds the information that determines the entire build: exact pixel dimensions, which are rarely a standard ratio, the pixel pitch, the brightness and colour behaviour of the panels, the refresh characteristics, the playback system, the file format and codec it accepts, and any duration limit. On multi panel walls there may be a pixel map that splits the canvas in ways no editor previews correctly.

Collect all of it in writing before the studio starts and put it in the brief. A late change to canvas size is a full re render, not a crop, and on a large format piece a re render is measured in days of machine time. Ask each candidate whether they have delivered to this specific venue type before, because the second time is always cheaper than the first.

Attract Loops Are Written Differently From Films

A piece that repeats endlessly in a public space is a different craft from a piece with a beginning and an end. It needs a seamless loop point, no reliance on audio, a legible message within the few seconds someone actually looks, high contrast that survives ambient light, and enough variation that staff standing next to it all day do not lose their minds.

Brief for that explicitly, including the loop duration and whether the content must synchronise across several screens. Ask candidates to show looping work rather than narrative work. The skills overlap less than you would expect, and a narrative animator asked to make a loop will usually deliver a short film that stops.

Regulated Categories Add an Approval Layer in Las Vegas

Gaming, hospitality, nightlife and alcohol related content all carry rules about what can be depicted and how, and property brands typically run their own internal review on top. Animation gets caught by this more often than filmed work because a visual can imply an outcome or a claim the script never makes.

Map the approval chain before you agree a delivery date and put named reviewers into the schedule at script and at storyboard. Each approver is a potential week and they rarely run in parallel. A change made to a drawing is cheap. The same change after a large format render is expensive twice over, because the show date does not move.

On Site Playback Testing Is Part of the Job

Content that looks correct on a calibrated monitor can look washed out, over saturated or strobing on the actual hardware. Colour shifts, fine typography disappears, and fast motion tears on panels with a low refresh rate. The only reliable test is playing the file on the real screen with enough time left to fix what you see.

Put a test slot in the schedule and name who attends and who pays for the time. Ask candidates how they handle a fix discovered at load in, and whether they have a person who can be on site. A studio that treats delivery as the moment the file is uploaded has never had a client standing in front of a wall that looks wrong.

What the Quote Must Include Before You Compare Anything

Ask for separate lines covering design and storyboard, animation, rendering at the final canvas size, versions for every screen and format, sound and music licensing, on site testing and support, and the file handover. Bundled totals hide exactly the items that cause disputes, and on a project with several screen formats the versioning line is frequently larger than the hero build.

Settle usage as well. Voice, music and stock elements carry licences tied to a media, a territory and a term, and content built for an event that later runs on property screens for a year has quietly changed all three. State the intended life of the piece in the brief so it is priced once, and ask for a buyout if the answer is indefinite.

Shortlisting Animation Studios for a Show Deadline

Send every candidate the same document: screen specifications, canvas sizes, loop requirements, runtime, style reference, approval chain, test date, install date and handover list. Then judge the questions that come back. A studio that asks for the pixel map and the playback system before quoting has built for a venue before, and that experience is worth more than a prettier reel.

Make the working files a contractual deliverable beside the install date: editable projects, assets, render settings, fonts with their licences and audio stems, with written confirmation that every freelance contributor assigned their rights upward. Where the scope crosses disciplines, price campaign teams, communications advisers and app developers separately rather than accepting a bundle. If the craft you need is thin locally, the same brief sent to Los Angeles or Phoenix calibrates the price quickly. Verified profiles and client feedback sit in the studio directory, and one shared brief gets you comparable replies.
