Best 15+ Animation Studios in Prague

Prague animation carries a craft tradition that is genuinely rare

Czech animation built its reputation on things made with hands: puppets, cut paper, models, practical sets, stop motion shot a frame at a time. That lineage is not a museum exhibit. It survives in working studios, in the model makers and set builders who supply them, and in a national audience that grew up on it. Very few markets can still assemble a stop motion crew without importing one.

Alongside it sits a large and modern film service industry that has spent decades serving international productions, which means compositing, colour, sound and three dimensional work are available at a professional standard and at a scale that a country this size would not otherwise sustain. For a buyer abroad, that is the proposition: distinctive craft on one side, industrial post capability on the other, and English speaking producers who are used to clients in another time zone.

If you commission something physical, the logistics are different

A drawn or computer made animation can be reviewed entirely through a screen. A puppet or model animation cannot, or at least not well. Sets and characters are built before anything moves, they are expensive to change once built, and a shoot occupies a stage for a fixed block of time that cannot easily be extended.

Plan for that. Budget a design and fabrication phase as its own stage with its own sign off, and go and see the build if you possibly can, or at minimum ask for photographs from several angles rather than a single flattering frame. Accept that once the shoot starts, changes are effectively impossible, which is a feature: it forces the arguments to happen early, when they are cheap. And ask what the contingency is if a puppet breaks, because it happens, and the difference between a studio that has spares and one that does not is measured in days of stage time.

The commercial post houses are a separate conversation

If your project is a product film, a title sequence, a campaign of cutdowns or a piece that mixes shot footage with motion graphics, you are shopping in a different part of this market. These companies are structured around advertising timelines and client stakeholders, they scale by bringing in freelancers, and they are comfortable with the short, iterative, format heavy work that a modern campaign actually consists of.

Do not brief both types with the same document and expect comparable answers. Decide first whether you are buying craft or throughput, then shortlist within that group. A studio that tells you honestly that your brief is not for them is giving you information worth having.

Running a project from another country

The working day overlaps fully with the rest of Europe and reaches into the North American morning, so live review is practical if you want it. What matters more than the clock is the note discipline. Appoint one person on your side to consolidate feedback, require a written summary from the studio after every call, and never let multiple stakeholders talk directly to the animator.

Ask for a schedule built around named gates rather than around weeks: script lock, design approval, animatic, shoot or animation start, offline, sound, delivery. Ask what happens to the end date if a gate slips by a week. The honest answer is that the date moves. A supplier who says the date holds regardless is planning to compress the sound and the grade, which is where an audience actually perceives quality.

Money, contracts and whose name is on the invoice

Get the registered Czech company name and number on the quote, not the studio brand. Confirm the contract currency, since the country is inside the European Union but does not use the euro, and many studios will quote foreign clients in euros for simplicity. Confirm the tax treatment your finance team will need before the first invoice rather than after it.

Tie payments to deliverables rather than to calendar dates, and keep a meaningful final payment attached to final delivery. Agree the rate for out of scope work at signature, not when you need it. And if the project is long, ask how the studio handles an unexpected currency movement, because a fixed price quoted in a currency neither of you uses is a shared risk that nobody has discussed.

Assets, masters and, if it exists, the puppet

For any animation, require the working project on delivery: scene files, layered artwork, rigs, three dimensional assets, the fonts used, and a textless and voiceless master so a future language version does not need a renegotiation. Require a list of anything licensed rather than created, with its term, since music is the element most likely to expire quietly.

For physical work there is an extra question nobody thinks to ask until later: who owns the puppets, the sets and the built artwork when the shoot ends. Studios often keep them, sometimes for good reasons, and sometimes they are simply stored until a cupboard is needed. If those objects have value to you, for an exhibition, a photo shoot, a second season, say so in the contract. If they do not, agree who disposes of them. Either answer is fine; discovering the answer by accident is not.

Whichever route you take, get several studios answering the same specification so the numbers mean something, and request the replies in one comparable format. The full animation studio directory covers the other markets worth pricing against, such as Budapest or Barcelona, and related local suppliers are listed separately for web design, digital marketing and search.
