Rotterdam Animation Work Often Starts From Engineering Files, Not a Script

A large share of the animation commissioned around this city is not a brand film. It is a machine that has to be shown working, a terminal process that has to be explained to a client who will never visit the site, an installation sequence that replaces a site visit, or a safety procedure that has to be understood by someone reading a second language. The port, the engineering firms clustered around it, the energy and maritime suppliers and the industrial equipment makers all buy this kind of work, and it behaves nothing like a marketing commission.

The difference shows up immediately in the first meeting. Nobody hands the studio a creative reference. They hand over a CAD assembly, a set of drawings, a specification document, and an engineer who is worried the result will be wrong. If that describes your project, the buying process below matters more than any reel.

What the Studio Needs From You Before It Can Quote

Technical animation quotes swing wildly for one reason: the studio cannot tell how much work sits between your files and a usable 3D scene. A clean parametric assembly exported to a neutral format is one conversation. A folder of legacy drawings, a part that only exists as a photograph, and an assembly with ten thousand fasteners that all need removing is a completely different one.

So prepare the answer before you ask for numbers. Which parts exist as 3D data and in which format. Which parts have to be modelled from scratch. Whether the geometry can be simplified, and who is allowed to decide that. Whether the real materials and finishes are documented anywhere. Studios that ask these questions early are the ones who have done this before; studios that quote without asking are guessing, and the guess will be revised.

Confidentiality Is a Practical Problem, Not a Paperwork Step

Handing a supplier your product geometry is handing over the product. In Rotterdam that lands on companies whose competitive position genuinely lives inside those files, so the agreement needs to say more than the usual clause. Where will the files be stored. Which named individuals get access. Are freelancers involved, and are they bound by the same terms. What happens to the working files when the project ends, and can the studio show the finished animation in its own reel, with which parts visible and which disguised.

That last point is worth settling in writing at the start. Many studios rely on reel rights for future work and will negotiate, but only if you raise it before they have built their pitch around showing your machine.

Accuracy Review Is the Part Everyone Under-Budgets

In a marketing film, revisions are about taste. In technical animation they are about correctness, and the people who catch the errors are engineers with day jobs. A valve turns the wrong way, a step in the sequence happens out of order, the operator stands where nobody would stand. Every one of these is cheap to fix at the grey, untextured stage and expensive after lighting and rendering.

Insist the schedule contains a blocked-out review of a rough animation with no materials and no polish, and make sure the reviewing engineer knows the date and knows that silence counts as approval. The single most common cause of a technical project overrunning is that the subject matter expert first looked at it when it already appeared finished, and then asked for a structural change.

Where the Rotterdam Supply Sits, and What Each Type Is Good At

Three kinds of supplier take on this work locally. Visualisation specialists who came from architecture or engineering and are comfortable with your file formats but sometimes weaker on storytelling. Broad motion studios with strong design instincts who will need an engineer on their side of the table. And a freelance layer of experienced 3D artists, excellent value for a contained sequence, riskier when the job runs across months and needs a producer.

Match the type to what is hardest about your project. If the geometry is the hard part, buy technical competence and accept plainer visual language. If the challenge is that a non-technical audience has to care, buy the design instinct and supply the engineering rigour yourself. Trying to get both from one small team at one price is how projects stall.

Deliverables That Outlive the Launch

Industrial animation has a long tail that marketing work rarely has. The same sequence ends up on a trade stand as a silent loop, inside a training module, in a sales tablet, and in a manual as a series of stills. Specify that range at the start, because it changes how the scene is built. A shot composed for a silent loop needs on-screen labelling that a narrated version does not; a stand screen with an unusual pixel ratio needs framing decided before rendering, not cropped afterwards.

Ask for the scene files, the render passes and the labelled text as editable layers rather than baked pixels. The product will change. When it does, an editable scene means a revision; a flattened video means paying for the sequence twice.

Comparing Two Numbers That Were Built Differently

Ask every studio to split its figure into data preparation and modelling, look development, animation, rendering, and revision rounds, and to state explicitly how many named review passes are included. Rendering is worth its own line: a photoreal sequence can cost more in machine time than in artist time, and a studio that has thought about it will say so rather than absorb the risk quietly and then argue.

Also ask what happens if your engineering team changes the design mid project, which on a real product it often does. A supplier who has an answer ready has lived through it.

Starting the Shortlist in Rotterdam

Pick suppliers by the closest analogue in their portfolio, not by overall polish: a studio that has animated a comparable mechanism will understand your files faster than one with a prettier reel. Provider profiles for this category sit in the directory of animation companies. If the sequence has to sit inside a configurator or a customer portal, read the software developers in the city and the mobile development teams here at the same time, since the delivery format is usually their decision as much as the studio's. When the technical brief and the file list are ready, send them out once and gather the responses together. For a broader European pool on the same kind of work, the roster in Berlin is worth a look.
