Best 15+ Pr Agencies in Berlin

Reading the Berlin press market before you brief anyone

Search results for this service mix at least four kinds of supplier and label none of them. There are solo consultants who were journalists or press officers and who trade almost entirely on the contacts they built in one beat. There are owner led shops of five or six people that run a handful of retained accounts. There are integrated communications firms that sell public relations next to design and events. And there are city offices of international groups, staffed from a shared bench and priced accordingly.

The useful question is not which type is strongest, it is which weakness you can live with. A consultant gives you the senior person on every call and disappears for two weeks in August. A small shop gives you continuity and a narrow contact book. An integrated firm gives you range and a media team that is busy with three other launches. A network office gives you process, and rarely the person who pitched. Decide this before you read a single public relations proposal.

German language pitching is the work, not a line item

A large share of companies here think in English internally and communicate in German externally. Public relations is where that gap becomes visible, because a press release translated after the fact reads like a translation and editors notice within a paragraph. The tone of address you choose, formal or informal, sets a register you will keep for years, and switching it later looks like a rebrand.

Ask who actually writes the German text, whether that person has written for the trade in question, and who holds the final read before anything goes out. If the plan is to draft in English and have an agency translate, say so in the contract and price the editing properly rather than pretending it is free.

Public relations here still runs on embargoes and exclusives

Newsrooms in this market take embargoes seriously, which is an advantage if you use them properly and a problem if you treat them casually. Offering the same story to everyone at once with a time lock is a different tactic from giving one title an exclusive first look, and the two produce very different coverage. A team that cannot explain when it would choose each is not running public relations, it is sending emails.

Check how a prospective agency handles a broken embargo, because it happens. The answer you want describes who calls the editor, how the rest of the list is told, and what the company says publicly, all decided before the story exists rather than during it.

Trade titles usually matter more than the famous mastheads

Founders ask for the big national names and are then surprised that a mention there moved nothing. Buyers in most sectors read specialist titles, association newsletters and a handful of industry podcasts, and those outlets have longer memories and better recall. A proposal that names actual trade titles and the journalists who cover your segment is worth more than one promising reach.

The same applies to broadcast and radio interviews here, which are still genuinely valuable for reputation and still require someone who has placed them before. Ask for two recent placements in your field and permission to contact those clients.

Where paid ends and earned begins

Advertorial, sponsored content and paid partnership formats are sold aggressively, and labelling rules are enforced. Public relations that quietly relies on bought placements produces a coverage report that looks impressive and persuades nobody, because readers here are quick to spot dressed up advertising and quick to say so in public.

Insist that the reporting separates earned coverage from paid placement and from owned channels. If part of the plan is paid amplification, that is a legitimate choice, but it belongs on its own line with its own budget. Teams that blur the two tend to blur their results as well.

Crisis preparation for a company nobody has heard of yet

Most early stage companies buy publicity and skip readiness, then discover that a data incident, a funding rumour or a founder dispute arrives with a reporter already holding half the facts. Preparation is cheap compared to the alternative: a named decision maker, a holding statement approved in advance, a rule about who speaks and who never does, and a contact route that works at ten at night.

Ask candidates what their out of hours arrangement actually is. Many retainers quietly assume office hours, and the gap between what the proposal implies and what the contract says is where relationships break.

Ownership, rights and getting out cleanly

Media lists built during a public relations engagement should be handed over on exit, along with message frameworks, approved biographies, photography with its licence terms, and the coverage archive. Photography rights in particular expire quietly while an image is still in circulation.

Two more points repay a meeting. Conflicts of interest are real in a city with dense startup clusters, so agree in writing what counts as a competing account. And set a notice period with a named handover pack rather than a vague promise of cooperation.

Turning a shortlist in Berlin into a decision you can defend

Write one brief, send the identical version to everyone, and require answers in your structure: public relations strategy, media relations hours, content production, crisis retainer and reporting as separate lines. Ask each firm which part of your plan they would drop. The one willing to shrink the scope is usually thinking about your outcome rather than their invoice.

If content production and search visibility are part of the same objective, compare search specialists working in this city and social and community teams here before you split a budget across two retainers. If your comparison is between markets rather than suppliers, the same exercise for communications firms in the northern port city is a useful control. The full directory of public relations firms shows who is listed, and when the brief is ready you can request proposals from several of them at once and compare the reasoning rather than the adjectives.
