Best 15+ Social Media Agencies in Australia

Buying social media across Australia means buying coverage as well as creative

A national social media brief here is a logistics problem before it is a creative one. The population is concentrated in a handful of widely separated metropolitan centres, the working day starts and ends at different hours across the eastern, central and western zones, and a campaign moment that lands at breakfast in one place lands before dawn in another. Agencies pitching a single content calendar with a single posting schedule usually have not thought about this, and the cost shows up as posts published into empty hours and community replies that arrive the next working day.

Ask every candidate plainly. Where do the people doing the daily work sit. What hours is the inbox genuinely watched, expressed in your customers' local time rather than the agency's. Who covers a live moment that starts after their office closes. And if you trade in regional areas as well as capital cities, ask how the plan differs, because rural and remote audiences behave differently and a plan built entirely on metropolitan behaviour will quietly under-serve a large part of your customer base.

Multi-location and franchise brands need a social media governance model first

A large share of national social media spend here comes from businesses with many outlets: franchise networks, dealer groups, clinics, gyms, real estate offices, hospitality groups and retail chains. These social media accounts fail for a governance reason rather than a creative one. Either head office controls everything and local pages go stale, or each location posts freely and the brand fragments into dozens of inconsistent voices, some of them making claims the company cannot support.

The workable answer is a documented middle path, and you should ask candidates to describe theirs before you discuss creative. Which assets are produced centrally and pushed out. What may a location change, and what may it never change. Who has publishing rights, and how are they revoked when a franchisee leaves. Is there an approval queue for local paid campaigns, or can any outlet spend against the brand name without review. How is a complaint received on a local page escalated. An agency with a real answer has run one of these networks before. An agency that improvises will hand you a governance problem dressed as a content plan.

Disclosure and advertising rules an agency must handle without being asked

Paid partnerships have to be disclosed clearly rather than buried in a hashtag block, and the obligation sits with the brand as well as the creator. Testimonials, before and after material, environmental claims and comparative statements all attract scrutiny, and regulated categories including health, therapeutic goods, alcohol, gambling and financial services carry their own restrictions on what may be said, shown and targeted. Age-restricted products bring their own targeting obligations.

So make compliance an explicit part of the social media brief rather than a clause at the end. Ask who reviews creator content before publication, what the agency does when a client requests a claim it cannot substantiate, and how it manages user comments that make claims on your behalf, since a comment left standing under your post can be treated as material you endorsed. Also confirm that any competition or giveaway mechanic is checked against the relevant rules before it launches, because permit and disclosure requirements vary and the agency running the mechanic is the one who should know.

Seasonality here runs against imported calendars

Retail and consumer planning follows a rhythm that most global playbooks get wrong. The summer holiday period sits at the turn of the year and drags a long, slow trading month behind it. The financial year ends at a different point from the calendar year, which changes when business buyers actually release budget. School terms, sporting seasons and major cultural moments do not line up with northern hemisphere assumptions.

Ask candidates to show you a twelve month outline with those realities in it, including the quiet periods. A plan with even activity across every month is a plan written by someone who has not traded here. The honest version concentrates production before the peaks, reduces output during the deep holiday lull, and treats the start of the financial year as a distinct commercial moment rather than an afterthought.

Fees, media handling and who holds the advertising account

Decide early whether you are buying social media management, production, paid media or all three, and require separate prices so the comparison is real. Ask whether paid work is charged as a share of spend, a flat fee or hourly, and whether the media budget passes through the agency's account or yours, because that single detail determines your exposure if the relationship ends during a campaign.

Then settle ownership. Your company should be the registered owner of every channel and advertising account, with the agency added as a partner rather than the reverse. Creative files, raw footage, the caption archive, advertising audiences and tracking configuration should return to you within a defined window after termination. For franchise networks, confirm the same applies to location-level pages, which are the assets most often lost when a partner changes.

Building a shortlist that works Australia wide

Give every firm the same page: footprint, audience, the outcome you will be judged on, your regulated categories, the internal capability you already have, and your approval route. Ask for named people with their locations and hours. Ask for one account they lost and why. Then weigh the social media governance and coverage answers ahead of the showreel, since national programmes are undone by operations rather than by ideas.

Look at the connected work while the brief is still open. Discovery belongs with SEO specialists working nationally, broader campaign planning with digital marketing agencies, coverage and announcements with public relations firms, creator sourcing with influencer marketing specialists, and the site behind the campaign with web design agencies. Open the social media agency directory to build the list, then request proposals so several teams answer the same page in the same order.
