Web Design Agencies in China and Chinese Type Layout

Why a Site Built for China Looks Different by Design

Buyers often arrive with a finished foreign design and a request to translate it. That request usually fails, and not for the reason people expect. The problem is not taste. Chinese text behaves differently on a page, the devices and apps people browse in are not the ones the original was drawn for, and the conventions that signal a legitimate business here are visual conventions that no foreign template contains. A studio working in this market draws for those rules from the first wireframe instead of patching them in afterwards.

Keep the disciplines separate when you write the brief. Research, information architecture, interface and brand application, typography, states, responsive rules, the component library and the handover package are design work. Implementation, platform choice and hosting belong elsewhere, and a brief that mixes them tends to be priced by whoever is least embarrassed to guess. If the harder half of your project is engineering, start with development firms working in the same market and commission the design separately.

Chinese Type Breaks Latin Layout Assumptions

Characters are uniform in width and there are no spaces between words, so a line can break almost anywhere and the ragged edge a Latin layout relies on disappears. Blocks of text become dense rectangles. Headlines that needed three lines in English land in one, which changes the visual rhythm of every hero section and card, and vertical spacing has to be rebuilt rather than reused.

Weight and size behave differently too. A character carries far more strokes than a letter, so small sizes turn to mud and thin weights lose legibility long before the equivalent Latin setting does. Designers here raise the minimum body size, avoid hairline weights for anything functional, and increase line height because the glyphs fill their box edge to edge.

Then there is the font itself. A Latin typeface ships with a few hundred glyphs; a Chinese one needs many thousands, which makes a full webfont far too heavy to load casually. The practical answers are system typefaces, dynamic subsetting that ships only the characters a page actually uses, or images for a small number of display headlines. This is a design decision with a real budget attached: licensing a commercial Chinese typeface for web use is expensive, and mixing a licensed Latin face with a system Chinese face means checking that the two look deliberate together rather than accidental.

Density Is a Local Preference, Not a Mistake

Home pages carry more entry points than a minimal foreign design would allow: wide navigation, multiple promotional rails, live campaign banners and a lot of links above the fold. Visitors are used to scanning rather than being guided, and a page stripped down to one message per screen often reads as thin or unfinished. The craft is in ordering that density so it still has hierarchy, using colour temperature and card weight rather than empty space to separate zones.

Red and gold carry celebratory meaning and are used heavily in promotions, so a brand palette built on them needs a plan for how the promotional layer stays distinguishable from the permanent interface. Long product detail pages made almost entirely of stacked images are common in retail, which is fast to produce and terrible for accessibility and for anyone on a slow connection. If your category expects that format, design a structured alternative and keep the imagery for what images are actually good at.

The Ecosystem Dictates Components

A large share of traffic never touches a standalone browser. People open links inside a messaging super app, so pages have to tolerate that in-app rendering environment, and the sharing card that appears when a link is forwarded is a design asset in its own right: title, thumbnail and crop all need drawing. QR codes are the normal bridge from offline to online and from desktop to handset, which means a code needs a permanent, well-composed place in the layout rather than being dropped into a corner at launch.

Many projects are not a website at all but a WeChat mini program, which has its own component conventions, its own navigation model and its own constraints on custom interface work. Designing one as though it were a responsive website produces something that feels foreign to the people using it. Ask a prospective studio to show a mini program alongside a site, and ask how they kept one brand system across both.

Search and content platforms shape structure too. Discovery leans on Baidu and on in-app content channels rather than only on an open web crawler, so the page structure a studio proposes should reflect where your audience will actually find you. Campaign design also has a firm calendar: the mid-year and late-year shopping festivals and the Spring Festival period each need their own skin, and a system that cannot be reskinned without a redesign will cost you every season.

Compliance Elements That Live in the Footer

Hosting inside the country requires a filing whose registration string has to be displayed in the footer, usually alongside a public security filing badge, both linking out to official records. Foreign designs leave no room for them, and they get appended as unstyled text at the last minute. Draw the footer with those elements present, treat them as trust signals rather than clutter, and place the company legal name in the same block.

Personal information rules also land on form design: consent has to be explicit, purpose has to be stated next to where the data is collected, and identity or phone verification adds a step that the flow must accommodate. Design that step, including its failure state, rather than assuming a developer will invent it.

What to Check Before You Sign a Studio in China

Ask for a project in your category, then ask who in the team drew it and whether that person is still there. Ask for the working file, not just flat images, and look for named components and tokens rather than a pile of ungrouped screens. Ask which characters the chosen typeface covers, how webfont weight was handled, and who holds the licence. Ask how the design behaves on a low-end handset in a crowded network.

Language is worth testing before contract rather than after. A bilingual interface needs someone who writes well in both, and the English version of a site often gets treated as an afterthought when it is the version your head office will judge. Agree who writes the English copy and who reviews it.

Keep the account for the design tool in your company name so the file survives a change of supplier, and get the export set, the responsive rules and the empty and error states as part of the deliverable rather than as a favour at the end.
