Best 15+ Web Design Agencies in Glasgow

Web design pitches are performances, and the people who perform them are frequently not the people who will draw your pages. That gap is the single most common source of disappointment in this category, and it is easy to close with two or three direct questions asked before anyone signs anything.

Ask who will draw the pages, not who will present them

Every studio has someone who is good in a room. In a smaller practice that person also does the work, which is one of the genuine advantages of hiring small. In a larger one they may be a director who will appear at the kickoff, at the presentation of the direction, and then not again until something goes wrong.

Ask for names and roles, what share of the web design hours each will take, what else those people are committed to during your window, and who takes over if one of them leaves mid project. Ask to meet at least one of them before signing. None of this is impolite; a well run studio answers it in a sentence, and hesitation is itself an answer.

The Glasgow web design market has a deep junior pipeline

The art schools and universities here feed a steady supply of talented young designers into local studios, which is a real strength. Junior designers working under close art direction produce excellent, energetic work, often better than a tired senior would. The same designers working without supervision produce something that looks like a template with a nice colour palette.

So the question is not whether juniors will touch your project, because they will and that is fine. The question is who reviews their work and how often. Ask how the studio structures art direction, whether there is a critique step before anything reaches a client, and who is accountable for the quality of what you are shown. A studio that is proud of how it develops people will enjoy answering this.

What a pitch actually tells you, and what it does not

Speculative concepts are the least informative part of any web design pitch. They are produced without research, they are designed to please rather than to work, and they encourage you to buy an image of a homepage rather than a way of working. Several good studios decline to produce them, and declining is not a red flag.

Ask instead for a walkthrough of a project from brief to launch, including something that went wrong and what changed as a result. Ask how they handled a client who disliked the first direction. Give each contender one genuinely awkward part of your content, a service nobody can describe in a sentence or a product range with inconsistent naming, and see who engages with the problem rather than decorating around it.

Design that a small marketing team can actually maintain

Most organisations here run their site with one or two people who have other jobs as well, and good web design accounts for that. A site designed for a full time content team will decay within a year: the campaign banner stays up past its season, pages that need a hand crafted image get published without one, and the careful layout slowly fills with text pasted from a document.

Make maintainability an explicit requirement. Ask what an editor sees when they add a page, whether every component works with the content you will realistically have rather than the content in the mockup, and what happens to a layout when someone writes three paragraphs where the design expected one. Ask for a short recorded walkthrough for whoever will update the site. It is the cheapest line in any proposal and the one most often cut.

Rebrands, phased rollouts and the half finished look

A large share of web design work here is triggered by a rebrand, and rebrands rarely land everywhere at once. Signage, print, vehicles and the site all move on different timetables, which leaves a period where the brand is visibly in two states.

Decide deliberately how to handle that. A phased rollout, where the new system is applied to key templates first and the rest follow, is usually cheaper and less risky than a single switch, provided somebody writes down which pages are in which state and when the remainder are due. What ruins it is drift: the first phase launches, attention moves elsewhere, and the half converted site becomes permanent. Put the later phases in the contract with dates attached rather than trusting that they will happen.

Public sector and third sector work changes the paperwork

If you are buying for a public body, a housing association, a college or a large charity, the process is scored rather than negotiated, and the design conversation is squeezed into the shape of a tender. Accessibility conformance will be a stated requirement rather than a nice to have, and the evaluators will read what you wrote rather than what you meant.

Two practical points. Write the accessibility requirement as a design obligation, not a testing obligation, so that contrast, focus states, heading order and form errors are decided while the interface is being drawn rather than audited afterwards. And leave room in the scoring for approach and team rather than weighting price so heavily that the outcome is decided before anyone reads the submissions. WCAG 2.1 is the usual reference point and every serious studio will already work to it.

Choosing one Glasgow web design studio over another

Send everyone the same brief: a template inventory rather than a page count, the named approver, the answer about who writes the copy, the photography position, and what you expect to receive at handover. Ask each to state their revision policy and what counts as a new round, since that clause causes more arguments than price does.

If you would rather not run that exchange several times over, you can describe the project once and receive structured proposals from several studios at once. Where the requirement turns out to be an application with logic behind it rather than a set of pages, the shortlist belongs with firms that build and maintain web applications. Where the identity itself is the unresolved part, start with brand and identity specialists before commissioning any web design work.
